Welcome to the East London Dog Community!
We are a group of individuals who formed this group to oppose the Tower Hamlets anti social dog PSPO. We currently communicate primarily through a WhatsApp Community.
Notes and Guidance for Group Members
Our Mission
To oppose the proposed Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which is overly restrictive and will negatively impact both dogs and their owners.
To agree an alternative resolution in which we and our dogs can peacefully coexist with all our neighbours, regardless of their background, without the dogs’ rights to behave in a natural way being compromised.
Code of Engagement
If you wish to join us, you must agree to abide by our code of engagement, which is designed to create an inclusive environment in which all members feel safe. Admins reserve the right to remove users without warning if these rules are not adhered to.
Communications must not contain any form of discrimination.
This includes racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and religious intolerance.
Posts must not make unfounded generalisations of any groups.
Posts should not spread false or unverified information.
Communications must not contain abuse, intimidation or threats of any kind.
Debate is welcome, but must be approached with respect and politeness.
Focus on ideas, not people – avoid personal criticisms or trying to prove others ‘wrong’.
Active listening – focus on understanding other people’s perspective and finding common ground and solutions.
Facts over assumptions – present reasonable requests, with evidence to support them.
Don’t get sidetracked – avoid speculation on wider political motivations of others.
Be the change – model good behaviour, and communicate in a way which unifies rather than alienates.
Stick to constructive or useful discussion.
We appreciate this is an emotive topic, but sharing negative views or information may not help us reach our goal.
Refrain from sending messages of a provocative nature - seeking to “get a rise” out of others or start bad-faith debates and arguments is not constructive.
Stick to facts and do not negatively speculate on motivations behind the PSPO.
Do not attack political parties or individual political figures.
This group and its actions are not affiliated with any political party.
We do not seek to promote party-political agendas of any kind
Grounded critique is ok, but please remember we wish to maintain respectful relations with all political parties and individuals, as we feel cooperation and collaboration are the best means of acheiving a positive solution for ourselves and the rest of the local community.
Responses or emoji reactions that support, agree with, or endorse others messages that do not adhere to the above criteria are also considered against the Code of Conduct.

Cross-cultural differences
We acknowledge there can be cross-cultural challenges re. dogs existing in public spaces.
We are considering public education as part of the proposed solution, to address fear & misunderstanding, and to promote responsible dog-ownership.
We are also concerned that the passing of the PSPO would create division between communities, and this is something we want to avoid at all costs.
How We Work
We have a WhatsApp Community set up for East London Dog Community. The WhatsApp Community contains several smaller group chats and an announcements channel. Anyone is welcome to join the community, provided they follow the above guidelines.
We are primarily run by a smaller team in the Steering Committee group. Currently, this mostly consists of the individuals who helped set the group. We’re open to expanding it, but do want to keep members limited to people with key involvement in the campaign.
What to Do When you Join the WhatsApp Community?
We encourage you to join the Welcome & General Chat WhatApp groups. Please drop a message in Welcome & General Chat to introduce yourself! We‘d love to hear more about why you joined, if/how you want to contribute, any relevant experience you have, and about your dog!
You’ll occasionally receive updates in the Announcements channel from the steering committee / admins.
Have a look at the existing groups / streams of work and join any of the groups that interest you. These are where related work will be discussed, and your opportunity to contribute. A small number of groups are restricted to those who have demonstrated good communication and active participation.
